• We previously shared the sad news that Plantlet will be shutting at the end of the month. Owner Izzi has now announced a 25% off sale for her last few weeks as she offloads her stock. Support her and grab a leafy bargain at the same time.

• Sad news for Broadstairs this week, Izzi at Plantlet has announced she has decided to close the shop. You only have until the end of July to go and enjoy her beautiful plant shop and snap up some plants before she closes the doors.

• Something is cooking in the back yard of Neptune’s Hall. And by that we mean Backyard Birds, their new rotisserie chicken offering coming to their courtyard very soon! Follow their new account for updates.

• Some more new food news… An NYC-style pizza place will be opening at the bottom of the high street, we believe in July. Base Pizzeria will be offering pizza by the slice. We can’t wait! Follow them here.

We’ve got Great Expectations for this one. From Fri to Sun expect the town to be completely taken over with all things Dickens to celebrate the writer’s links to the town. From a Victorian Bathing Beach Party on Viking Bay to kick things off on Fri at midday, to a Victorian Fair at Bleak House on Sat + Sun (10am - 5pm), there will also be plenty of kids entertainment at the Bandstand on all three days, from best bonnet competitions to Punch & Judy (from 11am on Sun). • On top of the new openings we’ve flagged above, last week, aesthetics, hair and health clinic Skin and Moore also had their grand re-opening at their brand new address: 18 St Peter’s Park Road.

• Kent Surf School has also officially moved. This week they announced they’re moving permanently from Viking Bay to Joss Bay! From now on, all of their surf lessons, paddleboard lessons, and equipment hire will take place at Joss. They’ve also announced they’ll be hosting social evenings throughout Summer, with the first one taking place on the beach on Fri 26 Jun.

• Speaking of Joss and Kent Surf School (they’ve had a busy week), they’ve also called on a Summer SUP Solstice all weekend later this month to welcome in the longest day of the year! Bring your boards for sunrise at 4.30am on 20 Jun, or 5.30am on the 21st. It’s going to be pretty special.

Hit The Harbour Arm. Don’t Miss POM

As well as bistro classics, POMUS have made a name for themselves for the ‘posh snacks’ that you crave with a chilled glass of wine, on a Saturday afternoon when sitting in the sunshine in Margate is the best place to be in the UK.

POM, their summer pop up on the Harbour Arm really delivers. Think ‘good’ olives, burrata, oysters, anchovies - basically it’s the picnic of dreams, but on a table with a view, with amazing natural sparkling wine and no one’s eating off plastic plates.

The food and wine menu changes monthly depending on what’s available and seasonal but it’ll always be deli style fish, meat, cheese and veggies on offer, so you can nibble on something delicious, soak up that sun and toast your great decision to visit / live in Margate.

Don’t Forget The OG: POMUS

Who knew The Centre was where the foodie tribes of Margate would flock to, but POMUS has become my dead cert fave for special meals, birthday treats and the place where small plates actually fill you up.

A menu that ranges from light and delicate to seriously stuffed that changes with the seasons and isn’t afraid to mix things up, POMUS has consistently delivered with delicious pairings plus their service is always on point - friendly, authoritative and they don’t leave you frantically trying to make eye contact to place an order (for more wine).

And it’s about to come into its own with outside tables that mean you can soak up the sun for a little longer.

One Ocean: Don’t Miss The First Ocean Summit in Thanet

Living in Thanet, we feel the sea. The changing colours. The every changing mood of the water but also the slow creep of coastal erosion as bits of cliffs crumble and winter storms damage our coastline.

Which is why I’m so excited that Turner in Margate is hosting the first ocean conservation festival, One Ocean 2026, a free two-day summit on art, activism and oceans, that will take place on Sat 20 and Sun 21 June.

• The Broadstairs Fireworks dates are out! There’s just three this Summer, so plan well: Wed 22 July and Wed 29 July (the Water Gala finale), both at 9.45pm. Plus Wed 19 Aug at an earlier time of 9.15pm, all with music playing at the bandstand.

• Thanet’s beaches have been awarded 4 Blue Flags and 12 Seaside Awards this week. Four bays - Minnis Bay, Botany Bay, Joss Bay and Ramsgate Main Sands - scored Blue Flag status for their excellent water quality and elite facilities.

• Save the date: Pride Broadstairs has been announced for 20 September this year! In fact, it’s going to be a Pride Weekender, with Pride Ramsgate taking place the day before as well. More details to come as we get them.

• This Sat 16 May is the annual Paddle Out Protest for Surfers Against Sewage on Viking Bay. A great cause to help get our seas clean, so grab your board and head on down from 1pm. Last year the beach was buzzing and there was even music entertaining the crowds while surfers and paddleboarders took to the water.

• Andrea’s beach kettlebells classes are heading back to Stone Bay! After successfully putting a petition out, her Hunky Dory Fitness classes will be back in her usual spot on the far end of Stone Bay. TBC when, so follow her for updates. She’ll still be holding classes at Foreness Waterski & Boat Club too.

• The wonderful Sophie at Tide and Seek Broadstairs has announced her May half term beach holiday club this week. Teaming up once more with Kali Wilson illustration, you can drop-off your kids from 10am - 2pm on Tue 26 May to enjoy a day of exploring, crafting, making and playing. Always the best fun. • The ever popular St Peter’s Village Tour is beginning its 2026 season from this Thu 14 May with a special inside performance. They will then be taking place outside (weather dependent) around St. Peter’s from Thu 21 May, all the way throughout Summer until mid September. It’s so popular some dates in June have already sold out! You can book yours here.

• Looking for a Book Club? Thanet Book Club holds theirs at Sonder on the last Tuesday of every month. You have until Tue 26 May to read their latest book, What Am I, A Deer? By Polly Barton. The Old Curiosity Shop has also announced two books for this month – Chocolat by Joanne Harris and / or The Death of Us by Abigail Dean. They’re meeting to discuss them both on Tue 2 June.

Finally, 5 Things To Know…

• Plantlet re-opens this week. Shop owner Izzi gave herself a much needed break to move house. But we’ve missed it, so we’re pleased to see the shop will be back open from this Wed 6 May. Her usual hours will then resume (Wed-Sat, 10am-5pm). Head there for all your green-fingered needs 🪴

• It’s May, hooray! Which is great for beach lovers, but not so much for beach-loving dogs and owners. Pooches will no longer be allowed on some Broadstairs bays between the core hours of 10am-6pm from this Fri all the way until 30 Sep. Find out exactly where there’s restrictions all around Thanet on this handy map.

• But thank goodness for Finxs. You’re still allowed to bring your dogs into their cafe if you bring them down the main steps and take them straight in. Just avoid the tables on the sand so they’re not actually on the beach. And you can of course bring your dogs down to the sands before 10am and after 6pm still.

• Over on Don’t Miss Margate, you can enter a fab competition to win a family day out at Dreamland this summer, on any date of your choosing. You’ve got to be in it to win it, so enter while you still can.

• Lastly, Smiths Townhouse are launching ‘Ralphs Bar’ in their courtyard next week. More details to follow in next week’s newsletter, but the launch is taking place on Sat 16 May from 4pm, complete with a DJ playing deep, soulful house.

• As mentioned above, there’s potentially huge news for Broadstairs (and for sauna fans like myself): We might be getting a SeaScrubSauna! The owners of The Funicular Hub have just announced that planning permission’s been put in to build a purpose-built sauna and cold plunge, with elevated Viking Bay sea views. SeaScrub already has sites in Margate, Whitstable, Folkestone and Macknade, so we have everything crossed this will get approved. See the concept and follow along for updates here.

• One of my absolute favourite days of the year in Broadstairs last year was the Summer Solstice, so I was excited to see that NāMAKA are gathering the troops once again. It’s not a formal event, more of an open invite to come down to the beach and celebrate summer with like-minded souls. Set your alarms, I’ll see you on Stone Bay from 4.30am on Sun 21 June for a sunrise dip and chill. NāMAKA will be open 5am - 6:30am for drinks as a special treat.

• Keen to get a new tattoo this Summer? Martha Smith Tattoo has announced that she’s opening up her books again this Sun 3 May at 7pm. It’s first come first served on these flash designs she’s just dropped, but she has space for customs too. This will be popular, so get those slots booked.

• New Qigong classes are coming to Broadstairs from next week. Gentle exercises that use slow movements, deep breathing, and mental focus to boost energy and reduce stress, teacher Dave Willis will be holding them Thu 2-3pm at St Peter’s Community Hall from 7 May.

• Have you seen that Staple in Ramsgate is now opening in the evenings? Starting from this Fri 1 May, then going forwards it will be open every Thu-Sat evening with beautiful wines and delicious snacks. Head on over.

• The Easter Holidays are over, which means Namaka’s back to its normal Spring hours from today. They’re now closed Tue, Wed and Thu, and will be open Fri - Mon, 8am - 3pm each week.

• Bleak House has just announced there’s going to be a new Children’s Literary Festival taking place there next month, on 30 May from 10am - 3pm. Keep an eye out for more details soon!

• Fifteen Square Metres is now closed for a short break this week, returning on Wed 29 April with a brand new menu. Keep an eye on their website for the new dishes, and book up for when they’re back.

• Plantlet will also be closed for a little while due to owner Izzi moving house. Congrats to her for buying her first home! The plant shop will be closed until 6 May now, when she’ll be back to her usual hours (Wed –Sat, 10am - 5pm).

• The previous owners of The Funicular Coffee House (which has now been taken over as Finxs) have also promised TWO exciting announcements coming soon. This week they shared that “soon you will be enjoying elevated Viking Bay Sea views”, which has got us very excited 👀. Finally, 5 Things To Know…

• Happy 10 years to Thanet’s favourite way of getting around – the Open Top Bus! The hugely popular service reopened for the 2026 season this weekend, and the best bit about it is they’ve added Broadstairs High Street into the route this year, getting you even closer to our shops and beaches as you hop on and hop off.

• Fancy an evening of lols, wine, beer, coffee and snacks? Salt are hosting a comedy night next month, with stand-up comic Adam Morrison Jones. Taking place on Sat 16 May, find out more and book your spot here.

• Sea, Spirit and Stones Store has announced some dates for Children’s Circles and Family Healing Sessions this week! They’re a chance for your child to become “self aware of their feelings through movement, meditation and sharing”. Sounds great. Dates for different age groups will take place on 14 and 19 May. More info.

• This one’s officially Ramsgate, but I drove past the build for REWD Padel, Thanet’s first ever padel club, this week and it’s getting closer to opening every single day! They launched their first memberships this week too. Keep an eye on updates yourself here.

• If you’re familiar with Scorcha Skate School, which runs weekly lessons at Broadstairs skate park, you’ll be aware they’re currently running a crowdfunder to replace their van, so they can continue to get skateboarding to even more young people in the community. They have lots of fun events going on locally, and you can support them here. Let’s get them back on the road!
